Title: Particle effect error?
Post by: Kamikaze Bob on August 03, 2012, 09:18:33 AM
After a long absence from TF2, and many Gigabytes of updates, I'm getting a visual error, similar to one which a few others on the Steam forums and Youtube have come across, with no definite fix:

http://bit.ly/M8vlvN (http://bit.ly/M8vlvN)

http://bit.ly/MCK7aT (http://bit.ly/MCK7aT)

An explosion of red crosses whenever I (or anyone) fires a shotgun, and every other shot with a pistol. Any class. It happens on multiple servers too, so It must be something to do with my game.
I've verified my game cache three times, and tried changing graphics drivers with no effect. I'm not too keen on re-downloading the whole game, so are there any particular files/folders that might have corrupted, that I could delete and replace?

Cheers!

That usually happens when your particle list is too long... Unfortunately, our plugin is also partially to blame because we go beyond the allotted limit.

Try this: navigate in your steam folder to \steamapps\<your account>\team fortress 2\tf\maps\ and delete ALL of particles.txt files (each map has its own so cp_dustbowl_particles.txt, pl_badwater_particles.txt, etc).

If this does not help, do above step except navigate to particles folder of \tf\ and delete manifest file from there. See if that solves the issue (your issue will more likely be solved by above method though).

Thanks for the suggestions, but it turns out I don't need to try them. After the latest update, everything seems to have cleared up.
